Fargo-Moorhead’s Foodie Friday: Mmm… Mmm… Monte’s

Looking for an awesome leisurely lunch spot in downtown? Check out Monte’s!

Monte's Downtown

Monte’s Downtown has been a fine dining staple in Fargo for over ten years. The food that used to be reserved for dinner hours only is now available for lunch during the week! I have had the great pleasure to enjoy lunch at Monte’s three times in the last two weeks… Lucky me! Seriously… I am spoiled.

Located at 220 Broadway in Fargo, Monte’s unassuming store front is nestled in with boutique shops and art studios.  From the front window passersby can see a narrow row of quaint tables and a fully stocked bar, but you must step inside to see the rest of the picture. Beneath a restored tin ceiling and crystal chandeliers, the tables are perfectly set and finished with a single stem, fresh flower. From entrance to exit, Monte’s has casual elegance covered.

The menu offers a little bit of everything without being overwhelming. Selections include refreshing salads, unique soups, and artful entrees that are as pretty on the plate as they sound on the menu. Plus, they are served with freshly baked rolls. They were still warm when they arrived to our table. Heaven.

Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes

The food is superb. I tried something different upon each visit and was delighted to find each choice as good as the next! The Crab Cakes were perfectly balanced with the corn and black bean salsa, the Pistachio Crusted Chicken was crunchy and rich, but my favorite was the daily special, Candied Pecan Crusted Chicken. The chicken was juicy and tender under the caramel-y pecans. It was topped with gorgonzola cheese and sautéed onions, peppers and capers and served with roasted fingerling potatoes and perfectly prepared green beans. It was probably the best chicken dish I have had all year… Yep. Definitely the best.

Finally, as any good foodie knows, there is always room for desert! While the carrot cake was good, I was surprised by the Chocolate Mousse Martini! I expected the dessert to be excessively sweet and heavy, but I was very pleased to find it fluffy with a rich dark chocolate flavor without being too dense. Plus, it was topped with a delightful mint gelato that was just like the stuff in Italy.

Chocolate Mousse Martini

All in all, Monte’s is an awesome experience with spectacular food. If you decide to check it out, be sure to allow for some extra time. The beautiful food can’t be rushed and there’s ONE very talented chef back in that kitchen making all the magic. Relax and enjoy the beautiful interior or step outside and enjoy their charming patio… just watch out for the birds! (I learned that lesson the hard way.)

  1. clean out your closets. Yep, things can get that bad. But if I hadn’t cleaned out this closet, I wouldn’t have snuck off to the bedroom for a while with an old issue of Gourmet I discovered in a totebag, the French Bistro one , and found a chicken recipe I couldn’t believe I hadn’t made yet. That I had to make immediately.
